The image was originally on the cover of a Russian edition of George Bernard Shaw's The Adventures of the Black Girl in Her Search for God. The artist was named Alexandrovsky. I got this from a wonderful 1936 graphic design handbook (called, oddly enough, Graphic Design) by Leon Friend and Joseph Hefter.
